Color Hunt – an Outdoor Activity for Toddlers

Getting outside and playing is great. Learning while doing it is even better! A color themed scavenger hunt is a great way to do this. Take this FREE printable board out into nature and find things to match all the colors. It is great for learning to identify and match colors as well as reinforcing a child’s connection to natures.

Outdoor Color Hunt for Toddlers

It’s no secret that my family loves to play outside. We are out there almost every day, no matter the weather. Most of the time we have unstructured play time. This includes blowing bubbles, playing with chalk, kicking a ball, and generally running around like a wild man. All of these activities have their benefits and are chances for my son to learn through play. I often say that “boredom” (unstructured time) is the best thing for a young child as it forces them to learn to entertain themselves and use their imagination.

However, sometimes I do like to have specific activities to do. Our favorite activity to do outside is a scavenger hunt. We have a general outdoor scavenger hunt that we often do on hikes. Recently though, I wanted to add a new element to these hunts. Instead of going out and finding a leaf, I wanted to have him to practice his colors outside. That is how I came up with the outdoor COLOR scavenger hunt.

Color Hunt Rules

The rules are simple, take your color board outside and go find objects that match each of the colors. Now, of course, they don’t have to match perfectly, but it is a really fun way to explore outside. You will have so much fun seeing what your child finds and they will love looking for all the colors. Find the rainbow outside with your kid and have fun in the sun!
