Baby’s First Christmas Gift Guide

Baby’s first Christmas is a fun and exciting time! It’s so wonderful to have a Christmas as a family. This year is our first Christmas as a family of 4! My first born is 2 years old (almost 3) and my second is only 2 months. The magic of holiday and Santa is alive for my first. He is so excited to see the presents under the tree and in his stocking. Of course, Santa has to visit his little brother as well! But what do you get for baby’s first Christmas when they are barely playing with toys?

There are so many fun things that you can get for a baby’s first Christmas, from teethers and pacifiers for the stocking to stuffed animals and more that go under the tree! These gifts don’t have to necessarily be used right away. Your baby will grow into playing with them over the course of the year. Simply stash some away and bring them out as desired! It’ll be like Christmas throughout the year for that lucky kid. Here is my guide for the best gifts for baby’s first Christmas.

For Under the Tree

Books

Twas the Night Before Christmas

Every home needs a copy of this book! It’s a holiday classic. In my house, we read it every Christmas Eve. This copy has some of the most beautiful illustrations I’ve ever seen. The detail in Santa’s face and beard is amazing! If you don’t already have this classic, this is the best copy you can have. Even if you already own this book, you can always get a new copy for baby.

High Contrast Books

High contrast pictures are the easiest for a young baby to see. That’s why books like Look Look are perfect for a baby’s first Christmas. The black and white provides the perfect contrast to keep baby’s attention and start a lifetime love for books!

Touch & Feel Books

Sensory input is something that every baby needs to be exposed to. Touch and feel books provide multiple textures, making the book more interactive and promoting development. This Christmas themed book is great for baby to “find” under the tree.

Toys

Step2 My First Christmas Tree

What’s better than to get a Christmas tree for Christmas? This tree is 33 inches tall and comes with 8 ornaments to allow baby to decorate their own little tree. It also comes with 3 train cars that go on a track around the bottom of the tree. This toy is a great way to let the littlest family members have holiday fun without worrying about them breaking anything! They also make a “my first gingerbread house” and “my first snowman“. Any of these are great gifts for baby’s first Christmas.

Melissa and Doug Fish Flip

This soft baby toy is another baby favorite. Baby can flip up the scales to see little pictures, look at themselves in the shatterproof mirror, and squeeze the squeaker for endless fun and stimulation. The crinkly scales encourage tactile exploration and it is completely washable! The Melissa and Doug brand has a lot of great toys for babies, but this is one of my favorites!

Hape Pound & Tap Bench and Xylophone

There are so many ways to play with this toy! When a baby hits the balls down, they run across the xylophone. Or you can remove the xylophone and play with them separately. The bright colors are great for teaching color recognition and matching! Baby can practice their fine motor skills while learning all about cause and effect. Plus, it’s a great way to explore music!

Gund Animated Baby Elephant

This huggable toy elephant plays peek a boo and “Do Your Ears Hang Low”. It’s easy to clean and is so playful and fun! This toy is great for any age child as they all like to play peek a boo. My kids love elephants and the flapping ears on this one make kids giggle out of control!

Fisher-Price Kick & Play Piano Gym

This toy has 4 modes to grow along with your baby, making it the gift that keeps on giving! Baby can lay and play, do tummy time, sit and play, or take the piano along as an on the go toy. It has a lot of bright colors and a variety of textures to encourage them to explore and develop their senses. They will develop their gross motor skills by kicking the piano, reaching for the toys on the overhead bar and pushing up to get a better look at everything. This activity gym is great for overall development and learning! This is a great gift from Santa for baby’s first Christmas.

Haba Rainbow Clutching Toy

This brightly colored wooden toy is another fun toy for exploration. The blocks are loosely connected so baby can manipulate them and make different shapes. I love non-electric toys like this one. It’s great to encourage curiosity in little minds while developing motor skills!

Mega Bloks Big Building Bag

Building with blocks was one of my favorite things to do as a kid! This bag of 80 Mega Blocks is a great way to start. The possibilities are endless and kids can use their imagination to build whatever they want. The big bag it comes in is perfect for storage. These blocks are compatible with any other Mega Blok playsets so you can always add to your collection!

Oball Toys

Oball toys are designed for little hands that are just learning to grab. They are really easy for tiny hands to manipulate and hold onto, making them the perfect toys for babies celebrating their very first Christmas. Oball makes a variety of toys from a basic ball to rattles, cars, and more! These are great for both play and development. The play bar pictured above is great for on the go play with a baby.

Manhattan Toy Wrinkle Rattle and Teether

This is a great toy for two-handed play. Babies can turn it around and hear the rattle from the middle cube. The colorful maze of BPA-free plastic tubes are great for teething babies and will keep baby’s attention. A toy and a teether in one! It has won several newborn toy awards so you know you are getting a great toy in this one!

Manhattan Toy High Contrast Play Mat

Another award winner from Manhattan Toys! The black and white images encourage visual development and are easy to see because of the high contrast. It can lay flat, get hung up, or made into a triangle for tummy time. Complete with a peek a boo mirror, crinkle paper, squeaker, teether and pull ring, this toy is sure to please any baby. Any toy that is this great for development deserves a spot on this gift guide.

For the Stocking

Sophie the Giraffe Teether

I’m sure you have heard of Sophie the Giraffe. She’s been around a while and is incredibly popular, for good reasons! She is a great teether and softly squeaks to delight little ones. This is a great gift set with Sophie and her 1,2,3 book to help teach numbers and counting. It’s made of 100% natural rubber which is soft to be gentle on baby’s tender gums. Sophie has delighted and soothed so many babies and is sure to do the same for yours!

Innobaby Fruit Teethers

These soft, food grade silicone teethers are FDA approved, BPA and toxin free, and they are dishwasher and freezer safe! The texture softly massages sore gums and stimulate teeth growth. The wide handle is great for babies to grasp onto and promotes motor skill development as they figure out how to move the fruit into their mouth for relief. This is an important skill to master when it comes time to learn how to feed themselves with utensils!

Nookums Paci-Plush

These are so cute! The plush toy is great for baby to grab onto and helps mom find the pacifier in a pinch. They come with a bunch of different types of animals like a puppy, monkey, lion, even a lobster. There are a ton of different plush pacifier toys. So why do I recommend this one? It’s because the pacifier isn’t permanently attached. Babies can be picky about what pacifier they want so they may not like the one that comes with the plush. With Nookums, you can switch out the pacifier that is attached, making it more appealing.

MAM Pacifiers

Pacifiers are a great stocking stuffer. I recommend this brand in particular because it is the only one my breastfed baby will take! I’ve tried several different kinds and he definitely prefers the MAM brand. When buying pacifiers, you need to make sure you pay attention to the age recommendations and get the appropriate ones for baby’s first Christmas.

The Perfect Baby’s First Christmas

Do you need to get a lot of gifts for baby’s first Christmas? Of course not! Getting a few gifts to put under the tree is fun for the whole family. You can get gifts that baby will grow into and simply keep them put away and take them out when they are ready for them so that they have new toys throughout the year. Especially when you already have a child, I find it important and fun to have presents for the baby. This way you can show how Santa comes to visit ALL the boys and girls, no matter how young they are. It keeps the magic alive and it makes for a perfect baby’s first Christmas.
