Creating a Home

Wish List for a New Home

We are settling into our new home. There is a lot more space than we had before, but we also had a lot of stuff. The first thing I’m noticing is that a lot of what worked in our old house no longer works in the new house. So I decided to browse Amazon and come up with a wish list of items that are perfect for our new home and how I want to organize and decorate.

This includes affiliate links. That means that if you purchase through these links that Califf Creations will receive compensation that is of no extra cost to you. This helps cover the costs of Califf Creations.

Some of the rooms in this house we don’t need anything to decorate with. For example, our dining room. While we do need a dining room table and eventually I’d love to have a china cabinet, we are decorating this room with a coastal theme. We have a lot of décor from our old house that fits this theme so we are simply condensing it all into the dining room. It will be filled with shells, shark jaws, model boats, fishing nets, and more. This is going to be a fun room to decorate, especially because we picked the perfect color for the walls!

The Kitchen

Here we could use some new items. I’m not sure how to decorate it yet, but there are some items that could help organize it better. There is a small space next to the stove that feels like it is a little wasted. A nice wall-mounted spice rack is perfect for that space and clears up a lot of room in a cabinet that would otherwise be occupied with the spices. To make it look even nicer, I’d love to have some uniform glass bottles to put the spices in. That way I just need to refill the bottles as needed and it looks really nice.

I’ve been really wanting to start canning. So, now that I have more room, I really want a canning kit. This way I can make a preserve a lot more of my own foods, which has been a dream of mine for a while. There are great kits that have everything you need to start. Then you just need to get some mason jars to store what you’ve made. For inspiration, a cookbook is always a good idea. This way I will never run out of ideas of great things to make and can!

The last item for my kitchen that has been on my bucket list for a long time is an herb garden. I love cooking with fresh herbs but they are always sold at the grocery store in quantities that are too large for my use and end up going bad. This is why I’ve always wanted a small herb garden so I can just take what I need as I need it. There are a couple different ways to accomplish this goal that I’m a like. The first is by having them on the windowsill in my kitchen. My favorite kit comes with everything you need to grow 10 varieties (Heirl0om Basil, Rosemary, Chives, Parsley, Cilantro, Lavender, Oregano, Dill, Sage, and Thyme) in a windowsill herb garden.

Another option for an herb garden is to have a mini aquaponic tank. The Back to the Roots system is a cute, closed-loop ecosystem where you keep a betta fish in the tank. The fishes waste fertilizes the plants on top and the plants clean the water. It’s a really cute system that comes with everything you need to get started.

Other items I’d like for my kitchen include:
Glass Mason Jars for storage

Containers that work with my Foodsaver system

For Preservation

For Marinating

Garden

I’ve never had a real garden so I’m looking forward to having some fun here. Before I can even think about getting serious, I need the proper tools. A nice heavy duty garden tool set would be the perfect way to start creating my dream garden. My goal is to have a garden that is both beautiful and functional. That means planting plants like lavender to repel fleas and ticks. I also want to have at least a small vegetable garden including tomatoes so that I can cook with more food that I am growing myself.

What is a garden without a few cute statues though? Since we are living surrounded by woods and wildlife, I want to include this in my garden by having deer, rabbit, and bear statues. Of course, there needs to be a little humor as well. How about a black bear eating some garden gnomes?

Living Room

I know I mentioned that our dining room is going to be a coastal theme, so to me, it only makes sense to have a rustic, woodsy theme in the living room. Our two favorite things are boating in the ocean and hiking in the woods, so it shows the two parts of who we are. Having a wood burning stove in the living room already starts to add that rustic feel, so we just need some décor to complete it.

Nothing says rustic better than reclaimed wood. These décor shelves would be beautiful on their own or with other little decorative pieces displayed on them.

Our throw pillows are so old that they need to be replaced. I found these great forest trees pillow covers that would really add that woodsy feel to our living room. We have old pillows to cover, but if you do not have pillows to put these covers on, you’ll just need to get 18×18 pillows.

I love all things about bears, especially black bears,  so when I found this cute canoe coaster set I thought that it would be a great addition to the room. Now I just need to get my black bear collection from my parents house to finish decorating the living room with more black bears!

Boys’ Rooms

Transportation Theme for our First
My first born son already has a cute Thomas the Tank Engine toddler bed and a road map rug in his room. That is why we decided to make his whole room transportation themed. We painted the walls blue and plan to put some cloud wall stickers up that we never put up in our old home. I found these cute vintage airplane models that would be perfect to hang from the ceiling. There are three different colors that would make the room look so special.

When I was a kid, I loved having glow in the dark stars above my bed, so I want to put them above my son’s bed. So, of course, there has to be a model spaceship hanging there!

Usually, I wouldn’t buy a new table lamp and would simply replace the shade, but this dump truck lamp is so cute that I might just bend my rule and get this for his transportation themed room!

His room came with a built-in bookcase and so there is no need to get him one, which is great. These bookends would be perfect to hold his book collection that keeps growing bigger and bigger!

Peter Pan Theme for our Second
Our second son is due in a few months, so I have the joy of creating another nursery. I’ve decided to do a Peter Pan theme. The walls are painted a mossy green color, which I thought was great for this type of décor. I have a long list of DIY décor that I want to do for this that I will share as I create them, but I also found a lot of great stuff on Amazon. There are a lot of fun decorative things that you can get for this theme, starting with wall stickers like Peter Pan’s shadowpirate ship, and quotes.

Every room needs a clock. I didn’t find one on Amazon that I loved for the transportation themed room. For Peter Pan though, there are several carved from a vinyl record. I haven’t decided which I like the best, they are all so cool! These are some of the designs I liked the best. There are also designs for almost anything you can imagine from Beauty and the Beast to Batman.

Then, there is always the classic look to a clock that can sit on a shelf and works perfectly with the theme. Might even need to put a crocodile next to it!

For hanging on the wall, having some nice metal feather hooks and a dreamcatcher crib mobile would bring in the parts of Peter Pan with Tiger Lily and the Native Americans.

Lastly, the pirate décor! So much to have fun with here: pirate hooks, ship wheels, and treasure chests complete with replica gold pieces!

It’s pretty obvious that I’m excited about the Peter Pan themed nursery! There is so much I can do with that and I can’t wait to share it all as it comes together.

I’m sure I will find more and more that I want for this new house, as I’m truly excited for all of it. Each room has it’s own challenges and it’s unique aspects that I can’t wait to explore. It’s going to be so much fun to organize and decorate and the farther along I get, the more I will find that I need and want. For now, I’ll focus on these items and it will all come together in time. As I finish different rooms, I will share how they end up looking. I hope you will enjoy this journey as much as I will!

These are some neat items. I think every kid needs glow in the dark stars in their bedroom at some point. They just make going to bed so much fun. I am hoping to add an herb garden to our kitchen window this year. The Peter Pan themed items look so fun, that will be one awesome looking room when it’s done.

Thanks! I can’t wait to actually get everything done. It’s been hard because my son has been very temperamental lately and that’s exhausting. Plus, simply being pregnant makes it harder!

Yay for your new home! I have always wanted an herb garden in my kitchen if not to cook with at least for the smells! 🙂 And the Peter Pan things you found!!! Soooo Darling! Have so much fun decorating your new house!

That wall mounted spice rack is something I need for my kitchen! Also love the idea of a herb garden. Have fun decorating and congrats!

Thank you! They make a lot of different kinds of wall mounted spice racks. The nice wooden ones cab get pretty pricy, but I like the simplicity of this one.

I love the clock and crocodile idea! Very clever. Probably best to have a clock with numbers though for a kids room. And Peter Pan shadow…love it!! Everything sounds so creative and fun!!
