Mail a Hug to Grandparents: An Easy Craft

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are meant to celebrate parents individually. As a child, these days were usually spent doing all of our parents’ favorite things. I remember gardening on Mother’s Day and boating on Father’s Day, making breakfast in bed and spending time together as a family. Now, as an adult with children of my own, I see the importance of this day to grandparents as well.

Sure, my mom and dad love to get cards from me or some token that I’ve been thinking of them but nothing beats something handmade from their grandchildren. Since I live in New York and they live in California, I usually don’t get to see them on these holidays so I have to send things in the mail. This year, as we all crave connection so much, I decided that my kids can mail them a hug!

There are many ways to do this that can be complicated or super simple. I’ll explain the simple way first and then share some ways you could step it up if you wanted.

Mail a Hug to Grandparents

Paint both kid’s right and left hands and have them make a handprint on a piece of construction paper. Note: I wasn’t thinking and picked red paint because I had the most of it. This is not recommended since then it almost looked like bloody handprints to me but oh well. Live and learn. haha
Cut out each handprint.
Take some yarn or any other string and hold it up to measure their arm span, cutting the yarn to equal the length of their arms.
Tape the yarn or string to the handprints and voila! You can easily mail a hug to grandparents for Mother’s and Father’s Day!

Alternative Ways to Mail a Hug

Trace each hand on construction paper and cut the paper out in the shape of your child’s hands. Then continue like above with the string.
Using a large roll of paper, and have your child lay down and spread their arms. Trace an outline of your child’s head and outstretched arms and then cut it out. Then, they can color it to look like themselves before folding it into a large envelope and mailing it to their grandparents.

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day for Grandparents

As a mother, I want to be celebrated on Mother’s Day but as a daughter, I want to celebrate my mother. The same goes for Father’s Day with my husband and father. Especially in this tough time of social distancing, it is important to feel as connected to our family as possible. That is why I know that receiving a hug in the mail from their grandchildren will put the perfect smile on their faces and show them how much they are loved.
