Christmas Craft for Preschoolers
I love crafting with my kids and always try to work some learning opportunities in. This year, my son is really into all things Christmas, especially the tree. He loved putting the ornaments on and looking at all the lights. That is why I decided that I wanted to do a Christmas tree craft with him! To work in some learning, I included different colors and a lot of fine motor practice.
This is a relatively easy craft so it is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Kids can practice their fine motor skills by using scissors and painting with Q-tips. My son also loves glitter, so he practices his pincer grip by adding a little sparkle to his craft.

What you need for this Christmas craft:
- Washable paint in a variety of colors
- Construction paper (green, brown, and a background color of choice)
- Glue sticks (I like the disappearing purple kind)
- Q-tips
- Kid safe scissors
- Glitter (optional)
Christmas Craft Prep
Once you gather all your supplies, it is time to get ready. The first thing to do is draw an outline of a tree on the green construction paper and a tree stump on the brown construction paper. I have found that my son has an easier time cutting out a shape if he has lines to “trace” with the scissors. The only other prep that is needed is to put some colored paint in little bowls or this awesome play mat from EZPZ. Put one Q-tip in each color and you are all ready!
Time to Craft!
The first step is to cut out the construction paper tree. I let my son use some child safe scissors to trace the shapes that I draw on the paper. He often needs some help, but if he is able to do it himself he is so proud! Once the shapes are cut out, he used the glue stick to glue the tree to the background paper. We use glue sticks that roll on purple, that way he can see where he has put glue and make sure he covers the whole shape.
Next, it is time to start decorating the tree! Using the Q-tips, he made little dots all over the tree and a yellow star on top. He likes to call them ornaments and lights depending on how large he makes the dots. This dot painting is his favorite part! Using the Q-tips to paint is great fine motor practice and we practice our color identification by naming them and making sure that he matches to Q-tip back to the same color.
Optional Glitter
To add a little sparkle, when the paint is still wet you can add some glitter. I pour a little out on our EZPZ play mat and he pinches the glitter and sprinkles it over the tree. He loves using glitter and I love the added touch it puts to his craft.
That’s it!
How easy is that Christmas craft? It is so easy, requires little prep, and is a lot of fun for toddlers and preschoolers. I hope you have fun bonding and crafting together! Post your pictures on Instagram and tag @califfcreations so that I can see all your beautiful projects!
