Best Alphabet Books for Babies and Toddlers
Books are a great way for kids to learn anything. They can do anything from introducing complex concepts to teaching basic skills. Learning the alphabet is the first building block of literacy, so using books to teach it makes sense. It will spark a child’s love and interest in books, especially if you can make it fun.
Incorporating the alphabet into every aspect of your day is the best way for a child to learn their letters. Having several different alphabet books is a great way to learn letters and increase a child’s vocabulary. The more words they hear, the better they will be able to communicate with you and others. The great thing about alphabet books is that even when they are really wordy (and more for an older toddler) you can adapt them to a baby by simply saying the letters and the word associated with them! Then the book will grow with the child as they can handle more words in a book.

I’ve compiled 15 of my favorite alphabet books for kids that will appeal to kids with a range of interests.
1. Elmo’s ABC Book
This book is all about helping Elmo decide what his favorite letter is. He names things he likes that starts with the different letters. For kids who love all things Elmo, Elmo’s ABC Book is a great storybook centered around the alphabet. If your child is more interested in Cookie Monster, there is also the ABC’s of Cookies.
2. Dinosaur A-Z
This is perfect for kids who love dinosaurs (and let’s be real, most kids do!) It takes kids through the alphabet while learning fun facts about different dinosaurs. Dinosaur A-Z is best for slightly older toddlers because it is more complex but the illustrations are just amazing!
3. Amazing ABC
Learn the alphabet through Lego creations! Amazing ABC is perfect for any young Lego lover. You can also have fun by trying to create the different images yourself (like making an apple for “a”) to reinforce the concepts.
4. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
This is one of my favorite books that I had as a kid and now read all the time to my son. It is written in a rhyming, almost sing-song tone that gets kids excited about their letters. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a staple in my house and I’ve probably read it a million times!
5. Dr. Seuss ABC
You simply can’t beat the rhyming of Dr. Seuss. Combine that with an alphabet book and you have a winner! Dr. Seuss ABC is a classic that deserves a place in all children’s collections.
6. ABC’s for Boys
Airplanes, bulldozers and things that go! ABC’s for Boys is a great book filled with things kids love. It’s not just for boys either, a well-placed sticker over the “for boys” part makes it perfect for girls who love vehicles and things that go.
7. ABC What Can She Be?
This is great for girls who dream showing them the alphabet of professions that she can aspire to be, from astronaut to zoologist. ABC What Can She Be? even teaches a little about each career so little girls might learn new careers they didn’t even know they dreamed to have! Unfortunately, I don’t have a clever trick to make this a unisex book, so this one is pretty much a “girl” book.
8. The Pajama Zoo Parade
Want a bedtime alphabet book? The Pajama Zoo Parade is the one for you! Zoo babies from A-Z bring learning time all the way to bedtime as they get ready for bed in this fun book.
9. The Perfect Potty Zoo
This is a fun take on combine potty training with the alphabet! It rhymes and has bright colors to entertain and educate a child while they sit on the potty and do their thing. The Perfect Potty Zoo is a great book for incorporating the alphabet into other aspects of life and it can make even potty training fun!

10. Today I Feel…An Alphabet of Feelings
I love books that combine concepts to teach. Today I Feel…An Alphabet of Feelings teaches all about the ranges of emotions people feel, from A-Z. It is great for kids who are starting to be more in touch with their feelings to learn more about them while practicing the alphabet at the same time.
11. Eating the Alphabet
This book covers both upper and lower case letters while teaching about fruits and vegetables from A-Z. Eating the Alphabet is a great way to expose kids to healthy foods in a fun way. I know a kid who hated zucchini before reading this book and now he gets excited about it yelling “Z is for zucchini!”
12. Everyday Alphabet Series
This is a whole series of books that bring the alphabet to place and things that kids encounter in their daily lives. Everyday Alphabet uses common examples for every letter A-Z so kids can relate to them. There are also different versions that show the alphabet in all different areas of a kid’s life.
13. ABCs of Biology
Want to introduce your child to science and the alphabet? These alphabet books from Baby University are written by experts. ABCs of Biology grows with your child as you can simply read “A is for Anatomy” or you can read about what anatomy is. There are other alphabet books that teach about different subjects as well.
14. A is for Apple (Trace and Flip)
This book is really engaging and is another favorite of my sons. With flaps to flip and traceable letters, there is something to do on every page to keep kids interested. A is for Apple also has both upper and lower case letters to learn them both at the same time.
15. I Spy Little Letters
I Spy books were a big part of my childhood. In I Spy Little Letters, kids search the photos for letters using simply clues. These are a great way to make a game out of learning the alphabet and identifying letters.

This book list is top-notch! I see a mix of classics as well as modern and innovative titles. I am particularly curious about the ABC Book of Feelings and the ABCs of Biology. My three-year-old is super interested in reading and writing and these books would be a great supplement to his learning. Thank you for this!
